Chapter 30

Chapter 30

I got a telephone call from a private number. “Freidy, you know who I am.” I recognized the voice. “Yes… Hello?” “I’m taking a huge risk by calling you, so please, don’t say anything to anyone. I beg you. I’ve been up nights unable to sleep because I wanted to call you. I’m taking a very big risk.” “What’s…?” “I heard about your plans to run away.” “Ugh.” “I just want you to know. I think you need to know this. A lot is going on behind your back. A lot. Rabbis and the family are up with you. They are talking about taking your son away… I don’t know much, but I know they aren’t telling you.” I was too panicked to say anything. “Freidy… are you there?” “I’m…here.” “I don’t know more. I’m sure you know what a risk I just took. I just hope you know what you’re doing.” “I…really…thanks.” My hands shook violently as I hung up. I sat down near Seth. I tried to put a colorful Lego Duplo on top of a longer Lego Duplo. “Wha…tt…isss… thiss, Ssseth? A hhoussee...you’re building?” I thought of the governor’s recent prostitution scandal, and I felt that his fate would be mine. True, I was not governor of New York State, and I did not pay to receive excellent sexual services from Client Number 9 in a lavish hotel room, but the public shaming would be the same. The topic of the day would go from the disgraced governor to the disgraced Hasidic lady.  There would be so much to talk about, so much to speculate about this tragedy. The women would go to the neighbor to borrow eggs they didn’t need or call their sisters to say hello, just so they could be the first to break the story. The schadenfreude would give them more pleasure than any rebel could ever have in her sins. They’d sigh with feigned heartache “Nebech! A pity!”
