Dearest Friends and Witty Captioners and Flying Bochurim,
And now the July caption contest comes to a close. As does July. As does the season (almost). Where, oh where, is the glorious summer going?
I digress. Sniffle. The caption contest announcement:
This month’s cartoon for the contest was a totally random illustration of an orthodox-looking man suspended mid-air. I thought I’ll take a leap and just draw something totally absurd; without any ideas to focus on whatsoever. I had a bit of apprehension about it because I thought maybe it’ll be a dead-end and there won’t be any of those fantastically witty responses. As I was doodling this I was thinking

Frieda Vizel left the Hasidic community, the Modern Orthodox community and the Formerly Orthodox (OTD) community. She now lives in Pomona and is actively looking for a new community to leave. Thanks Rokhl, the truth is I’m an am huuretz but I do know the difference between a maskil and a yiddishist and I realized my mistake after I wrote the comment. I’m glad you were paying attention.

It wasn’t Freudian. I heard about this song 9 years ago from an Israeli chassidishe friend of mine, when he told me about it he said it was “fin di yiddishistn” I never gave it another thought until I was reminded of it while reading this post, after I wrote it I thought to myself that it probably was maskilim way earlier than the yiddishistn since they were the ones making fun of chassidim but since I wasn’t sure, and I really don’t know any more about the matter than what I just outlined, I didn’t edit my original comment.

Someone gave me a Chanukah present, the “Jewish Kids’ Catalogue,” when I was a little sprout. I later learned that it was a direct descendant of a famous hippie Jewish Renewal thing, the Jewish Catalogue. But I digress. It was full of cool stuff, like cartoons about Eldad Ha-dani and it has the music and words for az di rebbe zingt.It was quite fascinating to my percolating little mind.
